Day 6: For better or for worse, we had to be up so
early to catch the 6:15 ferry that we had to skip the breakfast.
From the ferry terminal at Ullapool we drove through the Highlands, past
Ben Nevis (Britain's tallest mountain) to Lochaline. We were a few
minutes behind schedule, and rest assured, single-track road is not a good
place to make up time. A few white-knuckled hours later, we made it
to the ferry. A brief stop at
Duart Castle
(seat of the clan Maclean) on Mull, and then over to the foot ferry from
Fionnphort to Iona. Iona is centred around the abbey established by
St. Columba in 563. More than 60 Scottish, Irish, and Norse kings
are buried here. The
Book of Kells was written here
Day 7: Back to the usual breakfast, but the car is on another island. Instead of hopping into it with choked arteries, Des and I hiked up a "mountain" to drink from the Well of Eternal Youth (tasted a bit stale, if you ask me), while Pam mingled with the monks. Eventually we made it back to the car, and pointed it towards Edinburgh. We stopped at Inverrary (seat of the dastardly Campbells), passed Loch Lomond (the largest body of fresh water in Britain), and Glasgow. Just before we arrived in Edinburgh, we came across the Falkirk Wheel. Not content with your £15million chair lift? How about splashing out £17.5million on a giant Ferris wheel for boats? Who said the Scots were thrifty... From there we made a brief stop at Loch Leven Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned before enjoying dinner and a pint at the Hawes Inn (the original, from Stevenson's 'Kidnapped') under the Queensferry Forth Bridge. Finally we arrived at our hotel in central Edinburgh (note to travellers: they get a bit prickly there when you pronounce it Ed-in-berg). DO NOT STAY at the Clifton Private Hotel - it was terrible.
